Hi, my name is Lucy Tomkins and I am the founder of Family Recovery UK, ICF and BALM accredited, Family Recovery Life Coach.
Having experienced, for many years, the devastating impact of addiction on my whole family, both as a mother and a wife, I volunteered for 5 years as a support worker with an addiction charity before qualifying as a Family Recovery Life Coach and starting Family Recovery UK in 2017. I have spent the last 25 years in self-development in order to help me understand what happened to me during those dark days and how I could have showed up differently for myself and my family.
Addiction targets individuals and families regardless of who you are and where you come from. It does not care whether you are rich or poor, good or bad. It does not care what gender you are, what religion you are, whether you come from a loving family or not. Addiction targets families with a history of addiction and families where there is no history of addiction.
Loving someone and being in a relationship with someone who is struggling with addiction was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. All the rules in the rule book, got thrown out the window. It felt like a bereavement as I lost two of the people I loved most in the world. Day by day, week by week, I witnessed my hopes for their future, and their potential disappear. All my dreams for this happy family I had wanted to create, seemed to vanish. I become more and more enmeshed in their addiction, more angry, frustrated, stressed, fearful, and exhausted. I became a person I did not recognise or particularly like. Looking back, I realise that, without knowing it, I had got as sick as they had. I have heard it described as death by a thousand paper cuts.
Fast forward a decade or two, and having made all the mistakes known to man, I am now lucky enough to be able to fulfil my passion, to help others struggling with a loved one's addiction. I believe that if we don't know what we don't know about addiction, it is almost impossible to make healthier choices for ourselves.
I teach my live, interactive, online Family Recovery Programme, to help families get educated about what addiction is, to raise awareness around the importance of recovery for the whole family and help you to implement the changes you want to make in your life so that you can start contributing towards recovery not the addiction.
This is a safe space for you to get the support and guidance, and the skills and tools you need, to help you heal from the impact of the addiction and start to reclaim your life, and start contributing towards a positive outcome for you, your family and your loved one.
My unique programme has been specifically designed to provide a safe space for you to learn about addiction. To raise your awareness of new ways of being around addiction, help you to heal from the impact of loving someone struggling with addiction and support you as you action these changes.
